Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to write a descriptive poem using various poetic devices and techniques.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pen/pencil
  • Access to a computer or library for research (optional)

Activities

  1. Introduction to Poetry (15 minutes)
    Begin by discussing the definition and purpose of poetry. Show examples of different types of poems and discuss their characteristics. Encourage the student to share any favorite poems or poets they may have.
  2. Poetic Devices Exploration (20 minutes)
    Introduce various poetic devices such as simile, metaphor, personification, alliteration, and imagery. Explain each device and provide examples. Have the student practice identifying these devices in sample poems.
  3. Writing a Descriptive Poem (30 minutes)
    Guide the student in brainstorming ideas for a descriptive poem. Help them choose a subject or theme to focus on. Encourage them to incorporate the poetic devices discussed earlier into their poem. Provide assistance and feedback as they write their poem.
  4. Sharing and Feedback (15 minutes)
    Allow the student to share their completed poem with you or other family members. Provide constructive feedback on their use of poetic devices, imagery, and overall effectiveness of the poem.
