Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the concept of plate tectonics and how it relates to the formation of different landforms on Earth.

Materials and Prep

  • Pokémon cards (preferably a variety of different types)

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Start by showing the student different Pokémon cards and ask them to identify the different types (e.g., fire, water, grass, etc.).
  2. Explain to the student that just like Pokémon cards have different types, the Earth's surface is made up of different types of landforms.
  3. Using the Pokémon cards as examples, discuss how the movement of tectonic plates beneath the Earth's surface can create different landforms, such as mountains, valleys, and plains.
  4. Encourage the student to imagine the Earth's crust as a giant jigsaw puzzle made up of these tectonic plates.
  5. Ask the student to arrange the Pokémon cards on a flat surface to represent the different tectonic plates.
  6. Have the student gently push the cards together to simulate the collision of tectonic plates, and observe how the cards may fold, buckle, or create mountains.
  7. Ask the student to move the cards apart to simulate the separation of tectonic plates, and observe how this movement may create rifts or valleys.
  8. Discuss with the student how the movement of tectonic plates over millions of years can shape the Earth's surface.

Sixth Grade Talking Points

  • "Tectonic plates are huge pieces of the Earth's crust that fit together like a puzzle."
  • "When these plates collide, they can create mountains, just like when two Pokémon cards are pushed together."
  • "When plates move apart, they can create rifts or valleys, similar to when you separate two Pokémon cards."
  • "The movement of tectonic plates over time is responsible for the formation of different landforms on Earth."
  • "Some examples of landforms created by tectonic activity include mountains, valleys, plains, and even volcanoes."
  • "Just like Pokémon cards have different types, the Earth's surface is made up of different types of landforms."
  • "Understanding plate tectonics helps scientists predict earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, which can be important for the safety of people living in affected areas."
