Objective
By the end of this lesson, the Eighth grade-level homeschool student will be able to analyze the role of costume design in storytelling and demonstrate their understanding by creating a costume design for a character from a chosen book.
Materials and Prep
- Pen and paper
- A selection of books or access to online book summaries
- Access to a computer or tablet for research
Activities
-
Begin by discussing the importance of costume design in theater and film. Talk about how costumes can help convey a character's personality, status, and time period.
-
Have the student select a book they have read or are interested in reading. Encourage them to choose a book with well-developed characters.
-
Ask the student to choose one character from the book and research the character's traits, personality, and role in the story. They can use the internet or the book itself for research.
-
Next, have the student create a costume design for the chosen character. They can sketch the design or describe it in writing, explaining their choices for colors, fabrics, and accessories.
-
Once the costume design is complete, have the student present their design to the class or a family member, explaining their thought process and how the costume reflects the character's traits.
