Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts while exploring the fascinating world of space.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencils
- Counting objects (e.g., small toys, buttons, or beads)
- Space-themed pictures or posters
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Counting Stars: Look at the space-themed pictures or posters and count the number of stars in each. Write down the number of stars for each picture.
-
Adding Rockets: Draw different numbers of rockets on a piece of paper. Practice adding them together. For example, if you have 2 rockets on one side and 3 rockets on the other side, how many rockets are there in total?
-
Subtracting Aliens: Draw a group of aliens on a piece of paper. Cross out some of the aliens and practice subtracting. For instance, if you have 5 aliens and cross out 2, how many aliens are left?
-
Counting Planets: Use counting objects (toys, buttons, or beads) to represent planets. Count them and practice writing the numbers.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Did you know that we can explore space and learn about planets, stars, and rockets?"
- "Counting stars helps us practice our counting skills. Let's count together and write down the numbers."
- "When we add rockets, we combine them to find out how many there are in total. Can you add these rockets for me?"
- "Subtracting aliens means taking away some of them. Let's cross out the aliens and see how many are left."
- "Counting planets is fun! We can use toys, buttons, or beads to represent planets. Let's count them and write the numbers."
