Objective
By the end of this lesson, the toddler will be able to recognize and pronounce basic French vocabulary related to reading.
Materials and Prep
- Picture books in French
- Flashcards with French words related to reading
- Colorful markers or crayons
- Whiteboard or large paper
Activities
-
Introduce the concept of reading in French by showing the toddler a picture book in French. Point to different objects or characters in the book and say their names in French. Encourage the toddler to repeat after you.
-
Use the flashcards to teach the toddler basic French vocabulary related to reading, such as "livre" (book), "lire" (to read), "page" (page), and "histoire" (story). Show each flashcard, say the word out loud, and have the toddler repeat after you. Repeat this activity until the toddler can recognize and pronounce the words confidently.
-
Engage the toddler in a drawing activity. Give them a whiteboard or large paper and ask them to draw their favorite book or a scene from a story. Encourage them to label their drawing using the French vocabulary they have learned. For example, they can write "livre" or "histoire" near the drawing.
-
Read a simple French storybook aloud to the toddler. Pause at certain points and ask them questions in French about the story. For example, "Qu'est-ce qui se passe dans cette histoire?" (What is happening in this story?) or "Qui est le personnage principal?" (Who is the main character?). Encourage the toddler to respond using simple French words or phrases they have learned.
