Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to demonstrate basic skills in oil painting and understand the techniques and principles associated with this medium.

Materials and Prep

  • Canvas or canvas board
  • Oil paints (primary colors: red, blue, yellow, white, black)
  • Paintbrushes (variety of sizes)
  • Palette
  • Turpentine or mineral spirits
  • Rags or paper towels
  • Easel (optional)
  • Reference image or object to paint

Before starting the lesson, make sure to cover the working area with newspaper or a protective covering. It's also important to have good ventilation in the painting area.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Oil Painting: Start by explaining the history and characteristics of oil painting as a medium. Discuss famous oil paintings and their significance.

  2. Color Mixing: Teach the student how to mix primary colors to create secondary and tertiary colors. Demonstrate on the palette and encourage the student to practice mixing colors.

  3. Basic Techniques: Show the student how to apply paint to the canvas using different brushstrokes, such as stippling, glazing, and impasto. Allow the student to experiment with each technique.

  4. Composition and Subject: Discuss the importance of composition and selecting a subject for the painting. Guide the student in choosing a reference image or object to paint.

  5. Painting Process: Walk the student through the steps of creating an oil painting, from sketching the composition to applying layers of paint. Provide guidance and tips along the way.

  6. Finishing Touches: Teach the student how to add final details and highlights to the painting. Encourage them to step back and assess their work, making any necessary adjustments.
