Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand some basic concepts of chemistry through fun activities related to surprise eggs.

Materials and Prep

  • Surprise eggs (empty or filled with small toys)
  • A small container of vinegar
  • A small container of baking soda
  • A dropper or pipette
  • A tray or plate
  • Protective gloves (optional)

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Observing the Reaction:
  2. Take one surprise egg and place it on a tray or plate. Using a dropper or pipette, carefully drop a few drops of vinegar onto the egg. Observe what happens to the egg as it reacts with the vinegar. Take note of any changes you see.

  3. Baking Soda Explosion:
  4. Take another surprise egg and fill it with a small amount of baking soda. Close the egg tightly. Place the egg on a tray or plate. Now, carefully pour a small amount of vinegar onto the egg. Watch as the vinegar reacts with the baking soda inside the egg, causing it to fizz and potentially explode!

  5. Experiment with Mixing:
  6. Take two empty surprise eggs. Fill one with vinegar and the other with baking soda. Close both eggs tightly. Now, carefully open both eggs simultaneously and observe what happens when the vinegar and baking soda mix together. Take note of any changes or reactions you see.

Preschool Grade Talking Points

  • Chemistry is the study of different substances and how they can change when they mix together.
  • Vinegar and baking soda are special substances that can react and create interesting changes.
  • When vinegar is dropped on the egg, it may start to bubble or fizz. This is because vinegar and the eggshell react with each other.
  • When we mix vinegar and baking soda together, they create a gas called carbon dioxide. This gas makes the mixture fizzy and can even cause an explosion!
  • In our experiment, we observed different reactions and changes when vinegar and baking soda were mixed with surprise eggs.
