Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to write a creative story inspired by the book "Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows".

Materials and Prep

  • Copy of the book "Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows"
  • Pen or pencil
  • Blank paper

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have read the book or at least have a basic understanding of the story.

Activities

  1. Discussion about the book
  2. Start by asking the student what they liked about the book "Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows". Encourage them to share their favorite parts or characters.

  3. Brainstorming ideas
  4. Ask the student to think about a new adventure for Zoey and Sassafras. What kind of magical creature or problem could they encounter? Write down their ideas on a piece of paper.

  5. Creating a story outline
  6. Using the ideas brainstormed, help the student create a simple outline for their story. It should include the beginning, middle, and end. Encourage them to think about the problem, solution, and how the characters will overcome challenges.

  7. Writing the story
  8. Using the outline as a guide, have the student write their creative story. Remind them to include details, descriptions, and dialogue to make it interesting and engaging.

  9. Editing and revising
  10. After completing the first draft, go through the story together and help the student identify any areas that can be improved. Encourage them to make changes, add more details, or clarify confusing parts.

  11. Final draft
  12. Once the story has been revised, have the student write a final draft. They can use their best handwriting and add illustrations if desired.

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "In the book 'Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows', Zoey is a girl who helps magical creatures. We are going to imagine a new adventure for Zoey and Sassafras."
  • "Let's think of different magical creatures or problems they could encounter. For example, they could meet a talking unicorn or help a baby dragon find its family."
  • "Now, we need to plan our story. We will create an outline with a beginning, middle, and end. This will help us organize our ideas."
  • "When we write our story, we want to make it interesting. We can include details, descriptions, and even make the characters talk to each other."
  • "After we finish writing, we will read our story again and make changes to make it even better. Sometimes we need to fix mistakes or add more details."
  • "Finally, we will write a final draft of our story. We can use our best handwriting and maybe even draw pictures to go along with the story."
