Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic concepts of biology related to dragons and marshmallows.
Materials and Prep
- Copy of the book "Zoey and Sassafras Dragons and Marshmallows"
- Paper and pencil
Activities
- Read the book "Zoey and Sassafras Dragons and Marshmallows" together.
- Discuss the different types of dragons mentioned in the book and their characteristics. Encourage the student to think about how they are similar to or different from real animals.
- Ask the student to draw their own dragon, combining features from different animals. Have them label the different parts of the dragon's body and explain their functions.
- Discuss the concept of habitats and how different animals have specific environments they live in. Ask the student to imagine a habitat for their dragon and describe the characteristics of that habitat.
- Introduce the concept of food chains by explaining how animals depend on each other for food. Use the example of a dragon eating marshmallows and ask the student to draw a simple food chain involving their dragon and other animals.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Dragons are mythical creatures that are often portrayed as large, flying reptiles with magical abilities."
- "In the book 'Zoey and Sassafras Dragons and Marshmallows,' Zoey helps dragons by using her scientific knowledge."
- "Animals, including dragons, have different body parts that help them survive and perform specific functions. For example, dragons have wings to fly and claws to catch their prey."
- "Habitats are the places where animals live. Different animals have different habitats, such as forests, deserts, or oceans."
- "Food chains show the flow of energy from one living thing to another. In the case of dragons, they eat marshmallows, but other animals might eat plants or other animals."
