Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and use nouns and verbs correctly in sentences.

Materials and Prep

  • Copy of the book "Zoey and Sassafras Dragons and Marshmallows"
  • Paper and pencil

Activities

  1. Read the book "Zoey and Sassafras Dragons and Marshmallows" together.
  2. While reading, pay attention to the different characters and actions in the story.

  3. Identify Nouns
  4. After reading, ask the student to identify the nouns in the story. Nouns are words that name people, places, things, or animals. Write down the nouns the student identifies on a piece of paper.

  5. Identify Verbs
  6. Next, ask the student to identify the verbs in the story. Verbs are words that show action or state of being. Write down the verbs the student identifies on a separate piece of paper.

  7. Create Sentences
  8. Using the nouns and verbs identified, have the student create sentences. Encourage them to be creative and use the characters and actions from the story. Write down the sentences they come up with.

  • "Nouns are words that name people, places, things, or animals. Can you think of some nouns from the story we read?"
  • "Verbs are words that show action or state of being. Can you think of some verbs from the story we read?"
  • "Let's use the nouns and verbs we identified to create sentences. Remember, a sentence needs a noun and a verb to make sense. What sentence can you create using the characters and actions from the story?"
  • "Great job! Now, let's read the sentences you created and see how well you used the nouns and verbs."
