Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic algebraic concepts through a fun activity involving five black cats.
Materials and Prep
- 5 black cat cutouts
- Pen or marker
- Blank paper
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Start by drawing five black cat cutouts on separate pieces of paper.
- Label each cat with a different number from 1 to 5.
- Ask the student to arrange the cats in different orders and count the total number of cats each time.
- Encourage the student to write down the number sentences for each arrangement, such as 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 15.
- Discuss with the student how the order of the cats doesn't change their total count, and introduce the concept of commutative property in addition.
- Challenge the student to come up with different ways to arrange the cats while still maintaining the same total count.
- Have the student create their own number sentences using the cats, and solve them together.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to learn about algebra, which is a special kind of math."
- "Algebra helps us solve problems using letters or symbols instead of just numbers."
- "We are going to use five black cats to help us understand algebra better."
- "We will arrange the cats in different orders and count how many cats we have each time."
- "We will write down number sentences to show the total count of the cats."
- "Even if we change the order of the cats, the total count stays the same."
- "This is called the commutative property of addition."
- "Let's challenge ourselves to find different ways to arrange the cats while keeping the same total count."
- "You can create your own number sentences using the cats, and we will solve them together."
