Objective
By the end of this lesson, the toddler will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts related to dinosaurs.
Materials and Prep
- Dinosaur toys or pictures
- Counting cards or number flashcards
- Pen and paper
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Activity 1: Counting Dinosaurs
- Activity 2: Dinosaur Addition
- Activity 3: Dinosaur Subtraction
Using the dinosaur toys or pictures, ask the toddler to count how many dinosaurs there are. Encourage them to point at each dinosaur as they count.
Take two dinosaur toys and ask the toddler to count how many dinosaurs there are in total. Write down the numbers on a piece of paper and show them the addition equation (e.g., 2 + 2 = 4) using the dinosaur toys. Let them see the concept of adding two numbers together to get a total.
Take a group of dinosaur toys and remove some of them. Ask the toddler to count how many dinosaurs are left. Write down the numbers on a piece of paper and show them the subtraction equation (e.g., 5 - 2 = 3) using the dinosaur toys. Let them see the concept of subtracting one number from another to find the difference.
Toddler Grade Talking Points
- "Dinosaurs are big and fascinating creatures that lived a long time ago."
- "We can count how many dinosaurs there are. Let's count together!"
- "When we add dinosaurs, we put them together to find out how many there are in total."
- "When we take away some dinosaurs, we find out how many are left. This is called subtraction."
- "Mathematics helps us understand numbers and how they relate to each other."
