Bearded Dragon Descriptive Adventure!
Materials Needed:
- Paper
- Pencil or Pen
- Optional: Colored pencils or crayons
- Optional: Access to pictures or facts about bearded dragons (books or internet)
Hello awesome writer! Today, we're going on a writing adventure starring one of the coolest reptiles around – the bearded dragon! You love these spiky critters, so let's use that passion to make our writing super exciting.
Activity 1: The Beardie Brainstorm!
Let's think all about bearded dragons. What do they look like? How do they feel? What do they do? How do they move? Where do they live? Grab your paper and pencil and let's brainstorm! Write down as many words as you can think of to describe a bearded dragon. Think about:
- Sight: Spiky, scales, brown, tan, yellow, orange, big head, triangle head, flat body, long tail, sleepy eyes, beard (that puffs up!), colors
- Touch: Rough, bumpy, dry, warm (if basking!), smooth (belly?), sharp (claws?)
- Sound: Quiet, hissing (rarely?), scratching
- Movement: Slow, quick crawl, head bobbing, waving, basking, climbing
- Habitat: Desert, dry, hot, rocks, sand, branches, heat lamp, enclosure
Don't worry about spelling right now, just get your ideas down!
Activity 2: Write Your Dragon Tale!
Now it's time to use those amazing descriptive words. Choose one of the following writing tasks:
- Descriptive Paragraph: Write a detailed paragraph describing a bearded dragon. Imagine you're describing it to someone who has never seen one before. Use lots of the words you brainstormed! Try to include details about how it looks, feels (imagine touching it gently!), and maybe how it moves.
- A Day in the Life Story: Write a short story (one or two paragraphs) about a day in the life of a pet bearded dragon. What does it do? Does it explore its tank? Eat some crickets? Bask under its lamp? Interact with its owner? Use your descriptive words to bring the story to life!
Writer's Check:
Read your writing out loud. Does it make sense? Did you use interesting descriptive words? Did you paint a picture with your words? Great job! You've successfully combined your interest in bearded dragons with your awesome writing skills!
