Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the basic concepts of Earth Science related to nature.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- Nature observation journal (optional)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Go on a Nature Walk:
Take a walk outside in a nearby park, garden, or even in your backyard. Observe and explore the natural surroundings. Encourage the student to use their senses to observe and document interesting things they see, hear, smell, or feel. They can draw or write about their observations in their nature observation journal if they have one.
- Identify Different Types of Rocks:
Collect a few rocks during your nature walk. Sit down together and examine the rocks. Talk about their different colors, shapes, and textures. Help the student understand that rocks come in different types, such as sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic. Encourage them to describe the rocks using these characteristics.
- Learn About the Water Cycle:
Discuss the water cycle with the student. Explain how water evaporates from bodies of water, forms clouds, and falls back to the ground as rain, snow, or hail. Use simple diagrams or drawings to illustrate the different stages of the water cycle. You can also show videos or pictures to enhance their understanding.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Nature is all around us. It includes plants, animals, rocks, and more."
- "Rocks can be different colors, shapes, and textures. Some rocks are hard, while others are soft."
- "The water cycle is how water moves from the ground to the sky and back again."
