Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and locate different countries on a world map.

Materials and Prep

  • World map (can be printed or drawn)
  • Coloring pencils or markers
  • Index cards

No prior knowledge or preparation is needed for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduce the concept of countries to the student. Explain that countries are large areas of land with their own governments, people, and cultures.
  2. Show the student a world map and explain that it is a representation of all the countries in the world.
  3. Ask the student to choose a country they are interested in learning about.
  4. Using the index cards, have the student write the name of the chosen country on one card and draw its flag on another card.
  5. Help the student locate the chosen country on the world map and place the flag card on that location.
  6. Encourage the student to color the country on the map and decorate the flag card.
  7. Repeat steps 3-6 for additional countries if desired.
