Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a dinosaur-themed artwork using basic visual art techniques and demonstrate an understanding and appreciation for dinosaurs.

Materials and Prep

  • Dinosaur reference books or online resources
  • Plain white paper or sketchbook
  • Pencils
  • Erasers
  • Colored pencils or markers

Prior to the lesson, familiarize yourself with different types of dinosaurs and their characteristics. Gather the necessary materials and set up a comfortable workspace for the student.

Activities

  1. Introduction: Begin by discussing the student's interest in dinosaurs. Show them pictures or read short descriptions of different dinosaurs to spark their creativity.
  2. Dinosaur Sketching: Instruct the student to choose their favorite dinosaur and sketch its outline on the paper using a pencil. Encourage them to pay attention to the dinosaur's body shape, head, tail, and any distinguishing features.
  3. Adding Details: Once the basic outline is complete, guide the student in adding details to their dinosaur sketch. Discuss the textures of dinosaur skin, such as scales or feathers, and encourage the student to incorporate those details into their artwork.
  4. Coloring: After the sketch is finalized, provide the student with colored pencils or markers to add vibrant colors to their dinosaur. Discuss how different dinosaurs may have had different color patterns based on their environment.
  5. Display and Discuss: Once the artwork is complete, have the student share their creation and explain why they chose that particular dinosaur. Encourage them to discuss any interesting facts they learned about the dinosaur during the process.
