Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create a story using both words and pictures.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencils or pens
- Colored pencils or markers
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Word Association
Start by writing down a random word on a piece of paper. Then, think of as many words as you can that are associated with the initial word. For example, if the word is "dog," you could write down words like "bark," "tail," or "paws." Challenge yourself to come up with at least five associated words.
-
Activity 2: Picture Story
Now, choose one of the associated words from Activity 1. Use your imagination to create a short story that incorporates that word. Draw a picture that represents the story, and write a few sentences to describe what is happening in the picture.
-
Activity 3: Word and Picture Match
Take a new sheet of paper and draw a series of pictures that tell a story. Leave some space below each picture. Then, write down a word or phrase that describes each picture. Make sure the words and pictures match and are connected in some way. For example, if you draw a picture of a beach, you could write "sunny day" or "building sandcastles" below it.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "In today's lesson, we are going to explore how words and pictures can be used together to create stories."
- "We will start by playing a word association game, where we think of words that are related to a given word."
- "After that, we will use our imaginations to create a short story based on one of the associated words."
- "Finally, we will practice matching words and pictures to tell a story. We will draw pictures and write words or phrases that describe each picture."
