Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and locate the seven continents and five oceans on a world map.
Materials and Prep
- World map (either physical or printable)
- Colored pencils or markers
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Introduce the concept of continents and oceans by showing the world map to the student. Explain that continents are large land masses, and oceans are large bodies of saltwater that surround the continents.
- Ask the student to name any continents or oceans they may already know. Write down their answers on the map using colored pencils or markers.
- Guide the student in locating and labeling the seven continents (North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica) and the five oceans (Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean, and Arctic Ocean) on the map.
- Discuss interesting facts about each continent and ocean, such as the largest continent (Asia) or the deepest ocean (Pacific Ocean).
- Play a fun game of "Guess the Continent" where you describe a characteristic of a continent and the student has to guess which one it is.
