Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic concepts of cells, atoms, and molecules in the human body.
Materials and Prep
- Pen/pencil
- Blank paper
- Coloring materials (optional)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Draw a large circle on your blank paper to represent a cell. Inside the circle, draw smaller circles to represent the different organelles found in a cell (such as the nucleus, mitochondria, and ribosomes). Label each organelle.
If you want, you can color your cell and organelles to make it more fun!
-
Now, let's learn about atoms. Take another blank paper and draw a simple atom. Include a nucleus in the center and electrons orbiting around it. Label the parts of the atom.
Atoms are the building blocks of matter. They combine to form molecules, which make up everything around us, including our bodies!
-
Think about the different molecules that make up the human body. Draw some examples of molecules, such as water (H2O) and glucose (C6H12O6).
Discuss how molecules are made up of atoms bonded together.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "Cells are like tiny building blocks that make up our body. They have different parts called organelles, which perform specific functions."
- "Atoms are the tiniest particles that make up everything. They have a center called the nucleus and electrons that move around it."
- "Molecules are made up of atoms bonded together. Different molecules have different arrangements of atoms and can be found in our bodies, like water and glucose."
- "Cells, atoms, and molecules are all connected. Cells are made up of molecules, which are made up of atoms. Understanding these concepts helps us learn more about our own bodies."
