Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basics of the human body cardiovascular system and its importance in maintaining a healthy body.

Materials and Prep

  • Anatomy book or online resources
  • Pen and paper
  • Access to a computer or tablet

Activities

  1. Start by watching a short educational video about the cardiovascular system. Take notes on the key points you learn.

  2. Using the information from the video and your own research, create a labeled diagram of the cardiovascular system. Include the heart, blood vessels, and major organs involved.

  3. Write a short paragraph explaining the function of each major component of the cardiovascular system, such as the heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries.

  4. Take a virtual tour of the heart and explore its different chambers and valves. Make a list of interesting facts you discover.

  5. Conduct a simple experiment to observe how exercise affects your heart rate. Choose an exercise activity, such as jumping jacks or running in place, and measure your heart rate before, during, and after the activity. Record your findings and analyze the data.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "Our body has a special system called the cardiovascular system, which helps transport blood and oxygen throughout our body."
  • "The heart is the main organ of the cardiovascular system. It pumps blood to all parts of our body through a network of blood vessels."
  • "Arteries are like highways that carry blood away from the heart, while veins are like roads that bring blood back to the heart."
  • "Capillaries are tiny blood vessels that connect arteries and veins. They deliver oxygen and nutrients to our body's cells and remove waste products."
  • "When we exercise, our heart beats faster to pump more oxygen-rich blood to our muscles. This is why we may feel our heart pounding."
