Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and explain the functions and importance of the Human Body Integumentary system, and use that knowledge to write a graphic novel.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Coloring materials (crayons, markers, colored pencils)
  • Reference materials about the Human Body Integumentary system (books, websites)

Activities

  1. Introduce the concept of the Human Body Integumentary system through a discussion or a short video. Ask the student to take notes on the main functions and components of the system.

  2. Have the student create a storyboard for their graphic novel. Each panel should represent a different function or aspect of the Integumentary system. Encourage the use of illustrations and labels to enhance understanding.

  3. Once the storyboard is complete, guide the student in writing a script for their graphic novel. The script should include dialogue and narration that explains the functions and importance of the Integumentary system.

  4. Allow the student to illustrate and color their graphic novel based on the script. Encourage creativity and attention to detail.

  5. Once the graphic novel is complete, have the student present their work to you or other family members. They should explain the functions and importance of the Integumentary system using their graphic novel as a visual aid.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "The Integumentary system is like a protective shield for our bodies. It includes our skin, hair, and nails."
  • "Our skin helps us feel things through special nerves called receptors. It also helps regulate our body temperature."
  • "Hair and nails are made of a tough protein called keratin. They protect our skin and help us sense things too."
  • "The Integumentary system also helps keep our body safe from germs and harmful substances."
  • "When we get a cut or scrape, our skin heals itself by forming a scab. The scab protects the area while new skin grows underneath."
