Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the differences between live birth and eggs in animal reproduction.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Internet access (optional)

Prior knowledge required: Basic understanding of animal reproduction and the concept of birth.

Activities

  1. Research and Report

Choose an animal that interests you and find out whether it gives live birth or lays eggs. Write a short report explaining your findings. You can use books or the internet to gather information.

  2. Compare and Contrast

Create a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the characteristics of animals that give live birth and animals that lay eggs. Include at least three points for each category.

  3. Role Play

Imagine you are an animal giving live birth or laying eggs. Act out a short skit or draw a comic strip to show the process of reproduction from your chosen animal's perspective.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "Animals have different ways of giving birth or reproducing. Some animals give live birth, which means the babies come out of their mother's body. Other animals lay eggs, which hatch into babies."
  • "Animals that give live birth have babies that look similar to their parents. These babies are called offspring. Some examples of animals that give live birth are humans, dogs, and cats."
  • "Animals that lay eggs have babies that come out of the eggs. These babies are also called offspring. Some examples of animals that lay eggs are birds, reptiles like snakes and turtles, and insects like butterflies and bees."
  • "The process of giving live birth is called viviparity, while the process of laying eggs is called oviparity."
  • "Each method of reproduction has its advantages. Animals that give live birth can protect their babies inside their bodies and provide them with nutrients. Animals that lay eggs can lay many eggs at once and the eggs are protected by a shell."
