Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and explain the different diets of animals.
Materials and Prep
- Pen or pencil
- Blank paper
- Internet access (optional)
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Research and Draw
Use a pen or pencil and a blank sheet of paper to draw your favorite animal. Then, research what that animal eats and write down its diet below your drawing. You can use books or the internet to find this information. Be as detailed as possible.
-
Food Chain Game
Imagine you are in a forest ecosystem. Stand up and form a circle with other members of your family. Start by choosing one person to be a plant. The plant will hold hands with another person who will be a herbivore. The herbivore will then hold hands with another person who will be a carnivore. Continue this pattern until you have a complete food chain. Discuss each organism's diet as you form the food chain.
-
Animal Diet Quiz
Take a piece of paper and write down the names of five different animals. Then, try to guess their diets. Once you have made your guesses, research each animal's diet and write down the correct answers. Compare your guesses to the actual diets and see how many you got right.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "Animals have different diets, which means they eat different kinds of food."
- "Some animals, like cows and deer, are herbivores. They eat plants and grass."
- "Other animals, like lions and tigers, are carnivores. They eat other animals."
- "Some animals, like humans and bears, are omnivores. They eat both plants and animals."
- "The diet of an animal depends on its teeth, beak, or mouth shape, which help them eat their food."
