Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe spooky characters in a story.
Materials and Prep
- A book with spooky characters (e.g., "Room on the Broom" by Julia Donaldson)
- A whiteboard or large paper
- Markers or crayons
Activities
- Read the book "Room on the Broom" together.
- After reading, draw a large circle on the whiteboard or paper to create a character web.
- Discuss the characteristics of each character.
- Encourage your child to create their own spooky character.
As you read, point out the different spooky characters in the story, such as the witch, the cat, the dog, the bird, and the frog. Encourage your child to pay attention to their appearances and actions.
Write the word "Spooky Characters" in the center of the circle. Ask your child to recall the spooky characters from the story and write their names around the circle, connecting them to the center with lines.
Go through each character and ask your child what they remember about them. Prompt them with questions like, "What color was the witch's hat?" or "What sound did the cat make?". Write down their responses next to each character's name on the character web.
Provide your child with paper and markers or crayons. Ask them to draw a spooky character of their own and describe its appearance and actions. Help them write down their description if needed.
