Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills using Lego blocks.
Materials and Prep
- Lego blocks (various sizes and colors)
- Paper and pencil
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Counting with Lego:
- Start by counting the number of Lego blocks you have in total.
- Practice counting by arranging the blocks in a line and counting them one by one.
- Create different groups of blocks and count how many are in each group.
-
Adding and Subtracting with Lego:
- Take two groups of Lego blocks and count how many are in each group.
- Add the two groups together by combining them and counting the total.
- Subtract one group from the other by removing the blocks and counting what remains.
-
Building Patterns:
- Create a simple pattern using Lego blocks (e.g., red, blue, red, blue).
- Ask the student to continue the pattern by adding more blocks.
- Challenge the student to create their own pattern for you to continue.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to have fun with Lego blocks while practicing our math skills."
- "We will start by counting the number of Lego blocks we have. Let's count them together."
- "Now, let's arrange the blocks in a line and count them one by one."
- "Can you create different groups of blocks? Let's count how many are in each group."
- "Next, we will add two groups of blocks together. Let's count the total."
- "Now, we will subtract one group of blocks from the other. Let's count what remains."
- "Let's have some fun with patterns! I will start a pattern using Lego blocks. Can you continue it?"
- "Now, it's your turn to create a pattern for me to continue. Be creative!"
