Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to read and understand a simple recipe for baking cookies.

Materials and Prep

  • A children's baking cookbook
  • A set of measuring cups and spoons
  • A mixing bowl and spoon
  • Ingredients for a simple cookie recipe (e.g., flour, sugar, butter, vanilla extract)
  • An oven and baking sheet

Prior to the lesson, make sure you have all the necessary materials ready and review the recipe yourself.

Activities

  1. Read the recipe together
  2. Start by reading the recipe aloud to your student. Point out the different ingredients and measurements, emphasizing the importance of following the instructions.

  3. Identify the ingredients
  4. Show your student the actual ingredients and have them identify each one, matching it to the corresponding word in the recipe.

  5. Measure the ingredients
  6. Using the measuring cups and spoons, have your student help you measure the required amounts of each ingredient. Encourage them to count and compare the measurements.

  7. Mix the ingredients
  8. Guide your student in pouring and mixing the ingredients in the bowl. Talk about how the mixture changes as they combine the different elements.

  9. Follow the baking instructions
  10. Explain the baking instructions to your student, such as preheating the oven and placing the cookies on a baking sheet. Discuss the concept of temperature and waiting for the cookies to be done.

  11. Enjoy the cookies
  12. Once the cookies are baked and cooled, sit down together and enjoy the delicious treats you made! Talk about how reading the recipe helped you create something yummy.
