Objective
By the end of this lesson, the Kindergarten student will be able to identify and understand the concept of trick or treating, while practicing reading skills.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and crayons/markers
- Costume or picture of a costume
- Trick or treat bag or bucket
Before starting the lesson, make sure the student is familiar with basic reading skills such as letter recognition and sounding out simple words.
Activities
- Discuss Trick or Treat: Show the student a picture or wear a costume and ask if they know what it is. Explain that trick or treating is a fun activity where children dress up in costumes and go door to door to collect candy or treats.
- Read a Halloween-themed Book: Choose a Halloween-themed book appropriate for the student's reading level. Read the book aloud together, pointing out words and discussing the story.
- Create a Trick or Treat Bag: Have the student draw and decorate their own trick or treat bag using the paper and crayons/markers. Encourage them to write "Trick or Treat" on the bag if they are able to.
- Practice Reading: Write down a list of simple Halloween-related words on separate pieces of paper (e.g., ghost, witch, pumpkin). Have the student pick a word from the bag and read it aloud. Provide assistance if needed.
