Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply basic arithmetic skills in building creative worlds in Minecraft.
Materials and Prep
- Minecraft game
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson. Just make sure you have Minecraft installed and ready to play.
Activities
-
Start by opening Minecraft and entering a creative mode world.
-
Choose a building project you would like to work on. It could be a house, a castle, or anything else you can imagine.
-
Decide on the dimensions of your building. For example, if you want to build a house that is 5 blocks wide and 7 blocks long, calculate the total number of blocks needed.
-
Use addition and multiplication to determine how many blocks you need for each dimension. In the example, you would add 5 + 7 to find the total width, and then multiply the width by the length (5 x 7) to find the total number of blocks needed.
-
Start building your structure using the calculated number of blocks. You can use different types of blocks to make it more colorful and creative.
-
Once you finish building, step back and admire your creation!
First Grade Talking Points
- "In Minecraft, we can use math to help us build amazing structures."
- "We can decide how big or small we want our buildings to be."
- "To figure out how many blocks we need, we can add the numbers together."
- "We can also use multiplication to help us if we need more than one row or column of blocks."
- "By using math, we can create our own unique worlds in Minecraft!"
