Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply basic arithmetic skills to solve mathematical problems using Lego.
Materials and Prep
- Lego bricks
- Pen or pencil
- Plain paper or a notebook
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Counting Bricks: Take a pile of Lego bricks and count how many you have. Write down the number on your paper.
- Addition Tower: Build a tower using Lego bricks. Add more bricks to the tower and count how many bricks are in the tower now. Write down the new number on your paper. Repeat this process a few times.
- Subtraction Challenge: Start with a tower of Lego bricks. Remove some bricks from the tower and count how many bricks are left. Write down the new number on your paper. Repeat this process with different numbers.
- Number Patterns: Create a pattern using Lego bricks. For example, you could make a pattern of red, blue, yellow, red, blue, yellow bricks. Write down the pattern on your paper and continue it for a few more steps.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Mathematics is all about numbers and counting. Today, we will use Lego bricks to practice our counting skills."
- "We will learn how to add Lego bricks to build a tower and count how many bricks we have in total."
- "We will also learn how to subtract Lego bricks from a tower and count how many bricks are left."
- "Lastly, we will explore creating patterns using Lego bricks. Patterns help us see the order and repetition in numbers."
