Materials and Prep

  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Printed diagram of the human skeleton

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a clear workspace and all the materials listed above ready for use.

Activities

  1. Create a Paper Skeleton:

Using the construction paper, scissors, and glue, follow the printed diagram of the human skeleton to cut out and assemble your own paper skeleton. Pay attention to the different bones and how they connect with each other.

  2. Label the Bones:

Using a pencil and ruler, carefully label each bone on your paper skeleton. You can refer to the printed diagram or use an anatomy book or website for reference.

  3. Research Fun Facts:

Take some time to research interesting facts about the skeletal system. You can find information in books or online. Write down at least three fun facts that you find most interesting.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "The skeletal system is made up of bones that provide support and structure to our bodies."
  • "There are 206 bones in the adult human body, and they come in different shapes and sizes."
  • "Bones protect important organs like the brain, heart, and lungs."
  • "Bones also help us move by working together with muscles. They act as levers and provide attachment points for muscles."
  • "Did you know that bones are alive? They have their own blood supply and can repair themselves if they get injured!"
