Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and explain the basic functions of the respiratory system.
Materials and Prep
- No materials required
- Prior knowledge of the human body and basic understanding of organs
Activities
-
Start by discussing the importance of breathing and the role of the respiratory system in our bodies.
Ask the student to take a deep breath and feel their chest rise and fall. Explain that this is how air enters and leaves our bodies.
-
Next, draw a simple diagram of the respiratory system on a piece of paper or a whiteboard. Label the major organs such as the nose, trachea, lungs, and diaphragm.
Explain the function of each organ and how they work together to help us breathe.
-
Engage the student in a hands-on activity by simulating the process of breathing. Have them place their hand on their chest and take a deep breath in, feeling their chest rise. Then, have them exhale slowly, feeling their chest fall.
Repeat this a few times to help them understand the movement of the diaphragm and the expansion and contraction of the lungs.
-
Conclude the lesson by asking the student to summarize what they have learned about the respiratory system. Encourage them to use their own words and explain the importance of breathing for our overall health.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "The respiratory system helps us breathe and brings oxygen into our bodies."
- "We have organs like the nose, trachea, lungs, and diaphragm that work together for breathing."
- "When we take a deep breath, our chest rises because our lungs expand."
- "The diaphragm is a muscle that helps us breathe by moving up and down."
- "Breathing is important for our health and helps deliver oxygen to our cells."
