Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basics of the respiratory system, including its function and parts.
Materials and Prep
- No materials required
- Basic understanding of the human body
Activities
-
Start by discussing the importance of breathing and the role of the respiratory system in our bodies. Explain that the respiratory system helps us take in oxygen and remove carbon dioxide.
-
Draw a simple diagram of the respiratory system on a piece of paper or a whiteboard. Label the parts such as the lungs, trachea, bronchi, and diaphragm.
-
Engage in a hands-on activity to demonstrate how the respiratory system works. Have the student take a deep breath and feel their chest rise. Then, have them exhale and feel their chest fall. Explain that this movement is caused by the diaphragm, a muscle located below the lungs.
-
Encourage the student to ask questions and provide additional information as needed. You can also show them pictures or videos of the respiratory system to enhance their understanding.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "The respiratory system helps us breathe and is responsible for bringing oxygen into our bodies."
- "When we inhale, air enters through our nose or mouth and travels down the trachea, which is also known as the windpipe."
- "The trachea then divides into two bronchi, which lead to the lungs."
- "Inside the lungs, there are tiny air sacs called alveoli that exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide with our blood."
- "The diaphragm is a muscle below our lungs that helps us breathe. When it contracts, it moves down, allowing our lungs to expand and fill with air."
- "When we exhale, the diaphragm relaxes, pushing the air out of our lungs."
- "Our respiratory system works automatically, even when we're sleeping or not thinking about breathing."
