Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will understand the respiratory system by comparing it to a tree.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil and paper
- Coloring materials (optional)
- Basic knowledge of the parts of a tree (roots, trunk, branches, leaves)
Activities
-
Draw a large tree on a piece of paper, including the roots, trunk, branches, and leaves.
Label the different parts of the tree.
-
Explain that just like a tree, our respiratory system has different parts that work together to help us breathe.
Discuss the different parts of the respiratory system, such as the lungs, trachea, bronchi, and diaphragm.
-
Compare the roots of a tree to our nose and mouth, which are the entry points for air into our respiratory system.
Explain that just like the roots absorb water and nutrients for the tree, our nose and mouth allow air to enter our respiratory system.
-
Compare the trunk of a tree to our trachea, which is the main passage for air in our respiratory system.
Explain that just like the trunk supports the branches and leaves of a tree, the trachea supports the passage of air to the lungs.
-
Compare the branches and leaves of a tree to our bronchi and lungs, which exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Explain that just like the branches and leaves of a tree help in the process of photosynthesis, our bronchi and lungs help in the process of respiration.
-
Discuss the importance of the diaphragm, which is a muscle that helps us breathe.
Explain that just like the roots, trunk, branches, and leaves of a tree work together to keep the tree alive, our respiratory system works together to keep us alive and breathing.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "The respiratory system is like a tree because it has different parts that work together to help us breathe."
- "Our nose and mouth are like the roots of a tree because they allow air to enter our respiratory system."
- "The trachea is like the trunk of a tree because it supports the passage of air to our lungs."
- "Our bronchi and lungs are like the branches and leaves of a tree because they exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide."
- "The diaphragm is an important muscle that helps us breathe, just like how the roots, trunk, branches, and leaves of a tree work together to keep the tree alive."
