Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basics of the digestive system and apply that knowledge to complete a spy mission.
Materials and Prep
- A printed diagram of the digestive system
- A spy mission worksheet (can be created by the teacher)
- Colored pencils or markers
Activities
- Introduction to the Digestive System:
Begin by showing the printed diagram of the digestive system to the student. Explain each part of the system and its function, using simple language and examples. Encourage questions and discussion.
- Creating a Spy Mission:
Ask the student to imagine they are a spy on a mission to retrieve a secret message hidden inside the digestive system. Their task is to create a spy mission worksheet that includes clues related to the different parts of the digestive system. They can use their creativity to design the worksheet and come up with interesting clues.
- Completing the Spy Mission:
Once the worksheet is ready, the student can attempt to solve their own spy mission. They should read the clues and identify the corresponding parts of the digestive system. They can use the printed diagram as a reference. Encourage them to color or mark the identified parts on the diagram as they progress through the mission.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "The digestive system is the part of our body that helps break down the food we eat."
- "It starts from the mouth, where we chew our food, and goes all the way to the end, where the waste is eliminated."
- "The parts of the digestive system include the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum."
- "Each part has a specific job to do. For example, the stomach helps break down the food into smaller pieces."
- "The small intestine absorbs nutrients from the food, and the large intestine absorbs water before the waste is eliminated."
- "Now, let's imagine we are spies on a mission to retrieve a secret message hidden inside the digestive system. We will create a spy mission worksheet with clues related to the different parts of the system."
- "To complete the spy mission, we will read the clues and identify the corresponding parts of the digestive system. We can use a printed diagram as a reference."
- "Let's have fun and use our knowledge of the digestive system to complete the spy mission successfully!"
