Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basics of the digestive system and its functions, and how it relates to spies.
Materials and Prep
- Printed diagram of the digestive system
- Pen or pencil
- Blank paper
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Begin by discussing the digestive system and its importance in our bodies. Use the printed diagram as a visual aid to explain the different organs involved.
- Next, introduce the concept of spies and how they need to hide information. Explain that just like spies, our digestive system has mechanisms to break down and hide the nutrients from the food we eat.
- Ask the student to draw and label the different parts of the digestive system on a blank piece of paper. Encourage them to be creative and make it spy-themed if they'd like.
- Once they have finished drawing, have them explain the function of each organ and how it helps in the digestion process. Emphasize the importance of each part working together.
- Conclude the lesson by reviewing the main points and asking the student if they have any questions or if there is anything they would like to add.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "The digestive system is a group of organs that work together to break down food and absorb nutrients."
- "The mouth is where digestion begins. It helps us chew and swallow our food."
- "The esophagus is like a long tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. It uses muscles to push the food down."
- "The stomach is like a big bag that holds the food. It uses acids and enzymes to break down the food into smaller pieces."
- "The small intestine is where most of the nutrients from the food are absorbed into our bloodstream."
- "The large intestine absorbs water from the remaining food and turns it into solid waste."
- "The rectum stores the solid waste until it is ready to be eliminated from our bodies through the anus."
- "Just like spies, our digestive system has secret agents called enzymes that help break down the food and hide the nutrients."
- "All the organs in our digestive system work together like a team to help us stay healthy and provide energy for our bodies."
