Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will understand how the digestive system works to provide energy for our bodies and be able to explain its importance in a spy mission context.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research
  • Optional: Spy-themed props (e.g., magnifying glass, spy hat)

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Start by introducing the concept of the digestive system and its role in providing energy for our bodies. Explain that just like spies need energy to complete their missions, our bodies need energy to function properly.
  2. Ask the student to imagine they are a spy on a mission and their energy level is running low. Have them brainstorm and write down spy-themed foods that could provide them with energy. Encourage creativity and make it fun!
  3. Next, guide the student through a research activity. Ask them to find out how each of the spy-themed foods they listed in the previous activity is digested by the body and how it provides energy. They can use a computer or tablet to search for information.
  4. Once the research is complete, have the student create a spy mission report. In the report, they should explain the digestive process for each food they researched and how it helps provide energy for their spy mission.
  5. Finally, ask the student to present their spy mission report. They can use props and act as if they are briefing fellow spies on the importance of the digestive system for energy.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "The digestive system is like a spy's secret headquarters where food gets broken down to provide energy for our bodies."
  • "Just like spies need energy to complete their missions, our bodies need energy to function properly."
  • "Different foods have different ways of being digested by our bodies. Let's find out how spy-themed foods get turned into energy!"
  • "When we eat, our bodies break down the food into smaller pieces. This process is called digestion."
  • "The energy from the food we eat is used by our bodies to do all sorts of things, like running, thinking, and even breathing."
  • "Now that you know how the digestive system works, you can understand why it's important to choose foods that provide the right kind of energy for your spy missions."
