Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the excretory system of water plants and use critical thinking skills to analyze their role in the environment.

Materials and Prep

  • A water plant (such as an aquatic fern or water lily)
  • A clear container or fish tank
  • Clean water
  • A magnifying glass
  • Pen and paper

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Observe the water plant: Place the water plant in the clear container or fish tank filled with clean water. Use the magnifying glass to carefully examine the plant's leaves, stems, and roots. Take notes on any interesting features you observe.
  2. Research the excretory system: Using the information you gathered from observing the water plant, research how water plants excrete waste and maintain water balance. Look for information on how they release excess water, gases, and waste products.
  3. Critical thinking exercise: Write down three questions related to the excretory system of water plants. Think about how the excretory system helps water plants survive and thrive in their environment. Use your research findings to answer the questions.
  4. Present your findings: Share your observations, research, and answers to the critical thinking questions with a family member or friend. Explain the importance of the excretory system in water plants and how it contributes to their overall health and survival.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "Did you know that just like humans and animals, plants also have a way to get rid of waste? They have a special system called the excretory system."
  • "Water plants, like the one we are going to observe today, have an excretory system that helps them maintain water balance and get rid of waste."
  • "When we look at the water plant closely, we can see tiny openings on the leaves called stomata. These stomata help the plant release excess water and gases into the air."
  • "The roots of water plants also play a role in the excretory system. They help filter and absorb nutrients from the water, while releasing waste products."
  • "By understanding how the excretory system works in water plants, we can appreciate their important role in keeping our water ecosystems healthy."
