Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will understand how the excretory system works and be able to apply critical thinking skills to design a city water facility.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper
  • Internet access (optional)

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of the excretory system and how city water facilities work.

Activities

  1. Research and Learn

Use the internet or books to research and learn about the excretory system. Take notes on the different organs involved and their functions.

  2. Design a City Water Facility

Imagine you are a city planner and your task is to design a city water facility. Think about how the excretory system removes waste from our bodies and apply that knowledge to create a system that efficiently removes waste from the city. Draw a diagram or write a description of your city water facility.

  3. Critical Thinking Challenge

Think about the challenges faced by city water facilities in removing waste. What are some potential problems they might encounter? How can those problems be solved? Write down your thoughts and come up with creative solutions.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "The excretory system is responsible for removing waste from our bodies. It includes organs like the kidneys, bladder, and skin."
  • "City water facilities are like the excretory system for a city. They collect and treat wastewater to ensure it is safe to be reused or released back into the environment."
  • "When designing a city water facility, we need to think about how to remove waste efficiently, just like our excretory system does."
  • "Some challenges faced by city water facilities include removing harmful substances from wastewater and preventing pollution of natural water sources."
  • "To solve these challenges, engineers and scientists come up with innovative solutions, such as advanced filtration systems and chemical treatments."
