Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand how the excretory system works and how it can be compared to a water treatment plant.
Materials and Prep
- Whiteboard or large paper
- Markers or colored pencils
- Internet access (optional)
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of the human excretory system and how a water treatment plant works.
Activities
-
Draw a large diagram of the human excretory system on the whiteboard or paper. Label the different organs involved, such as the kidneys, bladder, and urethra.
-
Explain to the student that the excretory system is like a water treatment plant in our body. Just like a water treatment plant removes waste and impurities from dirty water to make it clean and safe to drink, our excretory system removes waste and toxins from our blood to keep our body healthy.
-
Discuss the different organs in the excretory system and their functions. For example, the kidneys filter waste and excess water from the blood, the bladder stores urine, and the urethra helps eliminate urine from the body.
-
Ask the student to think about how a water treatment plant cleans dirty water. Guide them to understand that the water goes through different processes, such as filtration, disinfection, and sedimentation, to remove impurities.
-
Compare these processes to the functions of the organs in the excretory system. For example, filtration in the kidneys is similar to the filtration process in a water treatment plant.
-
If possible, show the student pictures or videos of a water treatment plant to reinforce the comparison.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "Our body has a special system called the excretory system that helps remove waste and toxins from our blood, just like a water treatment plant cleans dirty water."
- "The main organs in our excretory system are the kidneys, bladder, and urethra. They each have important jobs to do."
- "The kidneys act like filters, removing waste and excess water from our blood. They are like the filtration process in a water treatment plant."
- "The bladder stores urine until we are ready to eliminate it from our body. It's like a storage tank in a water treatment plant."
- "The urethra helps eliminate urine from our body. It's like the pipes in a water treatment plant that carry clean water to our homes."
- "Just like a water treatment plant has different processes to clean water, our excretory system has different organs that work together to keep our body healthy."
