Objective

By the end of this lesson, the fifth-grade homeschool student will be able to understand the importance of physical activity at the beach and engage in various beach-related physical activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Beach or sandy area
  • Sunscreen
  • Towel
  • Water bottle

Prior knowledge of basic beach safety is recommended.

Activities

  1. Warm-up: Begin with a brisk walk or jog along the shoreline to get the heart rate up and muscles warmed up.
  2. Sand Drills: Set up a mini obstacle course using beach towels, seashells, or other beach items. Have the student perform various exercises like jumping over towels, crab-walking around shells, or hopping from one spot to another.
  3. Beach Ball Relay: Divide the student into two teams. Each team will have a beach ball. The student will run with the beach ball to a designated spot and pass it to the next team member, who will continue the relay. The team that finishes the relay first wins.
  4. Beach Yoga: Find a calm spot on the beach and guide the student through a series of simple yoga poses, such as the tree pose, warrior pose, and sun salutation. Emphasize the importance of balance, flexibility, and relaxation.
  5. Beach Scavenger Hunt: Create a list of beach-related items for the student to find, such as a seashell, a feather, a piece of driftwood, and a sea creature. Encourage the student to explore the beach while being physically active.
