Morning: Creative Waves & Salty Stories (Art & English)

🎨 Art: My Dream Beach Scene

Objective: Create your own amazing beach picture!

What to do:

1. Think about your favorite things at the beach. Is it the sunny sky, the blue water, the sandy shore, sparkly shells, or playful crabs?
2. Using your construction paper, crayons, markers, and glue, create your dream beach scene.
3. You can cut out wavy shapes for the ocean from blue paper, a yellow circle for the sun, and use brown paper for the sand.
4. Draw or cut out things you'd find on your beach: palm trees, beach umbrellas, starfish, dolphins, or even a pirate ship!
5. If you have real shells or pebbles, you can glue them onto your picture too!

✍️ English: A Sandy Story or Poem

Objective: Write a short story or poem about the beach.

What to do:

1. Think about an adventure you could have at the beach. Maybe you build a giant sandcastle, find a secret message in a bottle, or meet a friendly sea turtle.
2. Write a short story (at least 5 sentences) or a poem (at least 4 lines) about your beach adventure.
3. Try to use some "beachy" words like: sandy, salty, waves, splash, shells, sunny, breeze, shore.
4. Story Starter Idea: "One sunny morning, Roo went to the beach and discovered something sparkling in the sand..."
5. Poem Idea: Think about what you see, hear, smell, and feel at the beach.

📜 History: Beaches Through Time

Objective: Learn one interesting fact about beaches in the past.

Let's learn:

Did you know that people haven't always gone to the beach for fun and swimming like we do today? Long ago, beaches were very important for other reasons:

• Fishing and Food: People lived near beaches to catch fish and gather shellfish to eat.
• Travel and Trade: Beaches were places where boats could land to bring goods from far away or to start long journeys across the sea.
• Building Lighthouses: People built lighthouses on cliffs near beaches to help ships find their way at night and avoid crashing into rocks. One famous ancient lighthouse was the Lighthouse of Alexandria!

Activity: Imagine you are someone from long ago living near a beach. What would your day be like? Draw a small picture or tell a short story about it. Which historical use of the beach do you find most interesting?

Objective: Practice counting and simple addition/subtraction with beach items.

Let's count! (Use your manipulatives or draw pictures):

1. Roo found 5 beautiful shells and then found 3 more. How many shells does Roo have in total? (5 + 3 = ?)
2. There were 8 crabs scuttling on the sand. 3 crabs hid under a rock. How many crabs are still visible? (8 - 3 = ?)
3. You want to build a sandcastle with 4 towers on one side and 4 towers on the other. How many towers will your sandcastle have? (4 + 4 = ?)
4. Draw 6 starfish. Now imagine 2 starfish swim away. How many starfish are left?

Afternoon: Ocean Wonders (Science)

🔬 Science: Tides and Beach Creatures

Objective: Learn about tides and identify some beach creatures.

What are Tides?

Have you ever noticed that sometimes the water at the beach is very high up on the sand, and other times it's far away? That's because of tides! Tides are like the ocean taking a big breath in and out, very slowly. The moon's gravity pulls on the Earth and the water, causing the water level to rise (high tide) and fall (low tide) about twice a day.

Simple Tide Experiment:

1. Take your bowl or tub of water. This is your ocean!
2. Place a small rock near one edge of the "ocean" to be your "beach."
3. Gently tilt the bowl one way. See how the water covers more of your "beach"? That's like high tide!
4. Now gently tilt it the other way. See how the water moves away from your "beach"? That's like low tide!

Beach Creatures & Plants: (Look at pictures or videos if you have them)

• Crabs: They have hard shells and walk sideways. They often hide in the sand or under rocks.
• Seagulls: Birds you often see flying over the beach, looking for food.
• Starfish (Sea Stars): They usually have five arms and live on the sea floor or in tide pools.
• Shells: These are the hard homes of sea animals like snails, clams, and mussels. When the animal dies, the shell washes up on the beach.
• Seaweed: A type of plant that grows in the ocean. Sometimes it washes up on the beach.

Activity: Can you name three creatures or plants you might find at the beach? Tell one interesting fact about tides (e.g., "The moon helps make tides happen." or "Tides make the water go up and down.").
