Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explore and appreciate the stories and experiences of Black girls through reading and discussion.
Materials and Prep
- A selection of age-appropriate books featuring Black girls as main characters
- A comfortable reading area with pillows or cushions
- Discussion prompts or questions related to the books
Activities
- Introduce the concept of diversity and explain that people come from different backgrounds and have unique stories to share.
- Read aloud a book featuring a Black girl as the main character. Encourage active listening and engagement by asking questions throughout the story.
- After reading, have a discussion about the book. Ask open-ended questions like:
- "What did you like about the story?"
- "What challenges did the main character face?"
- "How did the main character solve those challenges?"
- "Can you relate to any part of the story?"
- Read another book featuring a different Black girl character, and repeat the discussion process.
- Encourage creativity and self-expression by inviting the student to draw or write about their favorite part of the stories or create their own short story featuring a Black girl as the main character.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to read books about Black girls. They have special stories to tell."
- "People come from different backgrounds and have different experiences. Black girls have their own unique stories."
- "Let's listen carefully to the stories and think about how the characters solve their problems."
- "What did you like about the story? Did you have a favorite part?"
- "Did you notice any challenges the main character faced? How did they solve those challenges?"
- "Can you think of a time when you faced a challenge? How did you handle it?"
- "Now, let's use our imagination and create our own story with a Black girl as the main character."
