Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will understand the basics of the reproductive system and how DNA plays a role in creating unique offspring.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen or pencil
  • Blank paper
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Optional: A computer or tablet for further research

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Create a Monster Parent:

Draw and color a picture of a monster parent. Be creative and think about what features you want your monster parent to have.

  2. Write DNA Code:

Using your colored pencils or markers, create a code for the different traits of your monster parent. For example, use a specific color for eye color, another color for body shape, and so on. Write down the code on a separate piece of paper.

  3. Create a Baby Monster:

Using the DNA code you created, mix and match the traits to create a baby monster. Draw and color a picture of the baby monster using the traits from the code.

  4. Explain Your Baby Monster:

Write a short paragraph explaining the traits your baby monster inherited from its monster parent. Include details about how DNA plays a role in passing on these traits.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "Did you know that living things, including monsters, have a way to make babies?"
  • "When monsters have babies, they pass on traits or characteristics to their offspring."
  • "DNA, which stands for deoxyribonucleic acid, is like a code that carries information about these traits."
  • "Each parent contributes half of their DNA to their baby, making the baby a unique combination of both parents."
  • "This is why siblings can look similar but also have some differences."
  • "In our activity today, we will create our own monster parents and use DNA codes to create baby monsters with different traits."
  • "Remember, DNA is like a special recipe that determines how our bodies look and function."
  • "Have fun being creative and let's see what kind of unique baby monsters you can create!"
