Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explore and understand the five senses through a fun taste test activity.

Materials and Prep

  • Various food items (e.g. sweet, sour, salty, bitter)
  • Blindfold or scarf
  • Small cups or bowls
  • Water for rinsing
  • Paper and pencil for note-taking

Prior to the lesson, gather the food items and set up a tasting station with the cups or bowls.

Activities

  1. Introduction: Begin by discussing the five senses (sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch) and their importance in helping us understand the world around us.
  2. Taste Test: Blindfold yourself and have someone else blindfolded as well. Take turns tasting different food items and try to identify the taste using only your sense of taste. Rinse your mouth with water between each sample.
  3. Discussion: After each taste, remove the blindfold and discuss your observations. What did the food taste like? Was it sweet, sour, salty, or bitter? Write down your findings.
  4. Repeat for Other Senses: Remove the blindfold and continue the taste test, this time using your other senses. Look at the food, smell it, touch it, and listen to any sounds it makes. Discuss how these additional senses contribute to your overall understanding and enjoyment of food.
  5. Conclusion: Wrap up the activity by summarizing your findings and emphasizing the importance of all five senses in experiencing the world.
