Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic concepts of physics through hands-on activities using Lego.

Materials and Prep

  • Lego bricks of various sizes and colors
  • A flat surface to build on
  • A ruler
  • A small toy car or any other small object that can roll

Before starting the lesson, make sure you are familiar with the different types of Lego bricks and their basic functionalities.

Activities

  1. Building Towers: Use Lego bricks to build towers of different heights. Measure the height of each tower using a ruler. Discuss how taller towers are usually made by stacking more bricks on top of each other.
  2. Ramp Experiment: Create a ramp using Lego bricks and place it at an incline. Place a small toy car at the top of the ramp and observe how it rolls down. Discuss how objects roll down ramps due to the force of gravity.
  3. Balancing Act: Build a see-saw using Lego bricks. Place different objects of varying weights on each side of the see-saw and observe how it balances or tips. Discuss how the position of objects on the see-saw affects its balance.
  4. Building Bridges: Use Lego bricks to build a bridge. Test its strength by placing small objects on top of it. Discuss how bridges need to be sturdy to support the weight of objects placed on them.

Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "Physics is the study of how things move and interact with each other."
  • "Lego bricks can help us understand physics because we can build different structures and see how they work."
  • "When we build towers with Lego bricks, the taller ones are made by adding more bricks on top."
  • "Ramps help objects roll down because of gravity. Gravity is the force that pulls objects towards the ground."
  • "When we balance objects on a see-saw, we need to make sure they are evenly distributed so it doesn't tip."
  • "Bridges need to be strong to hold things on top of them. We can test their strength using Lego bricks."
