Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explore and appreciate different fruits and vegetables through art activities.
Materials and Prep
- Assorted fruits and vegetables (e.g., apples, oranges, carrots, broccoli, etc.)
- Washable paint in various colors
- Paintbrushes
- White drawing paper
- Plates or palettes for paint
- Apron or old clothes to protect from paint
- Water and towels for cleaning
- Optional: Cutting board and child-safe knife for exploring the textures of fruits and vegetables
Activities
-
Exploring Textures:
Take a few fruits and vegetables and place them on a table. Encourage your child to touch and feel the different textures. Talk about how they feel, for example, "This apple is smooth, but this broccoli is bumpy."
-
Painting with Fruits and Vegetables:
Cut some fruits and vegetables in half to reveal their cross-sections. Dip the cut side into the paint and use them as stamps to create colorful prints on the paper. Experiment with different fruits and vegetables to see how their shapes and textures affect the prints.
-
Creating Fruit and Vegetable Collage:
Using the remaining whole fruits and vegetables, have your child dip them in paint and press them onto the paper to create a collage. Encourage them to overlap different shapes and colors to create an interesting composition.
