Objective

By the end of this lesson, the Kindergarten student will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts through fun Disney princess-themed activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Disney princess-themed flashcards (with numbers and princess pictures)
  • Counting objects (e.g., small princess figurines, princess-themed stickers)
  • Whiteboard or paper and markers
  • Printed worksheets with simple addition and subtraction problems (e.g., princess-themed coloring sheets with math equations)

Activities

  1. Counting Princesses: Show the student the Disney princess flashcards and ask them to count the number of princesses on each card. Encourage them to name the princesses as they count.

  2. Princess Addition: Use the counting objects (e.g., princess figurines) and ask the student to add different numbers of princesses together. For example, ask them to add 2 princesses and 3 princesses, and have them count the total number of princesses.

  3. Princess Subtraction: Using the same counting objects, ask the student to subtract princesses. For example, ask them to start with 5 princesses and remove 2 princesses, and have them count how many are left.

  4. Princess Math Worksheets: Provide the student with the printed worksheets and guide them through simple addition and subtraction problems. Encourage them to use the princess-themed coloring sheets to make it more engaging.

Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "Math is all around us, even in our favorite Disney princess stories!"
  • "We can count how many princesses there are on each flashcard. Let's practice counting together!"
  • "Adding princesses means putting more princesses together. Can you add 2 princesses and 3 princesses? Let's find out!"
  • "Subtracting princesses means taking some away. If we start with 5 princesses and remove 2, how many will be left? Let's subtract together!"
  • "Now, let's have some fun with princess-themed math worksheets! Solve the problems and color the princesses as you go."
