Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to solve basic arithmetic word problems involving addition and subtraction.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Blank paper or notebook
- Math word problem worksheets (you can create your own or find them online)
Before starting the lesson, make sure the student has a basic understanding of addition and subtraction.
Activities
- Warm-up: Begin the lesson by reviewing addition and subtraction. Ask the student to solve a few simple addition and subtraction problems orally or on paper.
- Introduction to Word Problems: Explain to the student that word problems are math problems presented in the form of a story or situation. Give examples of simple addition and subtraction word problems, such as "Sally has 3 apples. She eats 1 apple. How many apples does Sally have left?"
- Guided Practice: Provide the student with a few word problems and guide them through the process of solving them step by step. Emphasize the importance of reading the problem carefully, identifying the numbers and operations involved, and choosing the correct operation (addition or subtraction) to solve the problem.
- Independent Practice: Give the student a set of word problems to solve independently. Encourage them to use the strategies learned during the guided practice to solve the problems on their own.
- Review and Discussion: Go over the answers to the independent practice problems with the student. Discuss any challenges they faced and provide additional guidance if needed.
