By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to explore and understand the history and culture of Australia, African American art, and their connections.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, or paints)
  • Optional: books or articles on Australian history and African American art

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Research Australia

    Using the internet or books, research the history, geography, and culture of Australia. Take notes on interesting facts and key points.

  2. Create an Australian Artwork

    Using your art supplies, create a piece of artwork inspired by Australia. You can draw an Australian animal, paint a landscape, or create an Aboriginal-inspired dot painting.

  3. Explore African American Art

    Research and learn about African American artists and their contributions to the art world. Look at different styles, techniques, and themes in their artwork.

  4. Create an African American-inspired Artwork

    Using your art supplies, create a piece of artwork inspired by African American art. You can choose to depict an important figure, create an abstract piece, or explore a specific theme.

  5. Compare and Connect

    Compare and contrast the artwork you created for Australia and African American art. Write a short paragraph discussing the similarities and differences you notice, and how the two cultures influenced your artistic choices.
