Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply geometric concepts to the study of dinosaurs, including identifying shapes and angles found in dinosaur fossils.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil
  • Ruler or straight edge
  • Printed dinosaur pictures or dinosaur toys

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Geometric Shapes
  2. Start by discussing different geometric shapes with the student. Show them pictures of various dinosaurs and ask them to identify the shapes they see. For example, a T-Rex might have a triangular head and rectangular teeth. Encourage them to think about how shapes can be combined to form different parts of a dinosaur's body.

  3. Dinosaur Angles
  4. Next, introduce the concept of angles. Explain that angles can be found in dinosaur fossils and help us understand their movements and behaviors. Show the student pictures of dinosaur footprints or tracks and ask them to identify any angles they see. For example, a dinosaur footprint might have triangular toes or angled claw marks.

  5. Create Dinosaur Art
  6. Now it's time for some hands-on fun! Ask the student to choose a dinosaur they find interesting and draw its outline on a piece of paper. Encourage them to use different geometric shapes to represent different body parts. For example, the head could be a circle, the body a rectangle, and the tail a triangle. Once they have their outline, ask them to add angles to represent details like teeth, claws, or spikes.

  7. Measure the Angles
  8. Using a ruler or straight edge, ask the student to measure the angles they drew on their dinosaur. Help them identify whether the angles are acute, obtuse, or right angles. Discuss how the angles might relate to the dinosaur's movement or behavior. For example, sharp, acute angles might suggest a fast and agile dinosaur, while obtuse angles might indicate a slower and more powerful creature.

Fifth Grade Talking Points

  • "Did you know that geometric shapes can help us understand dinosaurs? Let's explore how different shapes make up a dinosaur's body."
  • "Angles are important too! They can be found in dinosaur fossils, like footprints. They give us clues about how dinosaurs moved and interacted with their environment."
  • "Now it's your turn to be an artist! Choose a dinosaur you like and draw its outline using different geometric shapes."
  • "Once you have your dinosaur outline, add angles to represent details like teeth, claws, or spikes. Think about how the angles might relate to the dinosaur's movement or behavior."
  • "Now let's measure the angles you drew. Use a ruler or straight edge to measure and classify them as acute, obtuse, or right angles. What can you infer about the dinosaur based on its angles?"
